PostSubject: GREATEST HOCKEY MOVIE EVER   Mon Feb 20, 2017 7:28 pm

Actually, this does not belong in Immaterial Material since the post is eminently important. Yet, this is where it will reach the inquiring eyes of FHL GMs.

I say "Slapshot" the greatest hockey movie ever made. Don't see a need for a discussion.

Yes, I and a then buddy who flew in from California made "Slapshot" pilgrimage to Johnstown, PA in winter of 2001.

Saw bus station without Coca-Cola machine. Statue of the dog that saved some residents of Johnstown by warning them of the onrushing flood water in GREAT FLOOD of late May 1889 when swollen dam for South Fork Hunting & Fishing Club ruptured after stretch of major rain.

Saw ECHL game at the Cambria County War Memorial (the arena shown in "Slapshot") between Johnstown Chiefs (then affiliated with Calgary) and the Dayton Bombers. Cannot remember with which NHL team Dayton was affiliated.

East Coast Hockey League has been gone from Johnstown (and my 'hood Trenton, NJ) now for several seasons. Former Johnstown franchise still in ECHL, but now calls Greenville, South Carolina home.

This post spurred by article on ESPN. Celebration this coming Saturday in Johnstown, the 25th, for the 40th anniversary of "Slapshot." The Hanson Brothers will be there. Will I be there?

I really have to think about attending.

I always assumed you were going to say Sudden Death was the best hockey movie ever...

Slapshot for sure. Mostly because it was good, but also because all the other hockey movies suck. Cool

PostSubject: Slapshot versus Sudden Death   Fri Mar 03, 2017 10:41 pm

IHD, you make a good point. But for me, the call is Slapshot. Was pretty close to what went on on in every game in the minors in the 1970s.

Today, probably not a player in pro hockey who hasn't seen the movie and who doesn't use some of the lines in the movie while at the rink or in the lockerroom. So in that way, the movie will live on and on and on.

Yes, Sudden Death involved the Penguins, the Civic Arena and the great Mike Lange, Penguins PBP announcer, as himself, but it finishes second on my list to Slapshot.
