Grab the popcorn kids, it’s time for the 2nd annual FHL Turkey Awards®©™.

The FHL Turkey Awards®©™ is an annual event that takes place each year at Thanksgiving. The award is presented to three players - one from each position - who have not lived up to their lofty expectations. That is, players taken relatively early in the draft who, as of late November, relatively suck.

The 2018-19 recipients are...

<drum roll, please>

ANZE KOPITAR
After collecting only 52 points two years ago, Anze Kopitar erupted for a career-best 92 points in 2017-18. The numbers were impressive as the Los Angeles center ripped 35 goals and dished out 57 assists. Many wondered if the season was a fluke. GM Henry wasn’t one of the doubters as the Hog boss laid claim to Kopitar in the 2nd round. On paper it looked like a steal. A 92 point forward in the second round?! 20 games into the season Kopitar has been anything but a steal, the 31 year-old amassing a single-figure total of 9 points (6 goals and, count ’em, 3 assists). At his current pace Kopitar will finish with 24 goals and 36 points. 2nd round numbers? No. Any round numbers? Also no. Hopefully GM Henry saved his receipt.

DISHONORABLE MENTION
Jamie Benn, drafted 14th overall (22GP, 7G, 10A, 17PTS)
William Karlsson, drafted in the 3rd round (23GP, 5G, 12A, 17PTS)

ERIK KARLSSON
When it comes to sure things, they don’t make them any better than Erik Karlsson. Granted Karlsson was playing for a different team, in a different city, with different teammates - but none of that matters cause we’re talking about Erik “Frickin'” Karlsson. As it turns out, it does matter. Selected by the Central Red Army with the third overall pick, Karlsson has struggled mightily since being transported to San Jose. In 22 games Karlsson has scored one goal and collected just 11 assists; numbers that rank him as the 20th best defenseman in the NHL (behind undrafted no-names Neal Pionk and Damon Severson). At his current pace Karlsson will close the season with 4 lousy goals and 45 average points. Is the uprooted Karlsson homesick? Maybe. Is Karlsson making GM Buker sick? Definitely.

DISHONORABLE MENTION
Drew Doughty, drafted in the 2nd round (21GP, 1G, 11A, 12PTS)
Alex Pietrangelo, drafted in the 2nd round (20GP, 3G, 4A, 7PTS)

MATT MURRAY
You can’t go wrong by drafting the starting goalie for the perennial Cup-contending Pittsburgh Penguins. Right? Wrong!! GM Morgan is learning that lesson the hard way as Matt Murray has been beyond bad. With the season soon to enter its third month, Murray has won only 4 games. He’s actually lucky to have won that many with a God-awful GAA of 4.08 and save percentage of .877. Things aren’t exactly looking up as Murray was recently carted to the shelf. The silver lining to this otherwise dark cloud? Murray will score the same number points on the shelf as he did while crouched between the pipes. Murray’s injury won’t change much. The Boulder Flyers goaltending was bad ... and it’s still bad.

A clip of Matt Murray in action:

DISHONORABLE MENTION
Cam Talbot, drafted in the 4th round (5W, 8L, 3.33 GAA, .888 SV%)
Mike Smith, drafted in the 4th round (5W, 7L, 3.48 GAA, .876 SV%)

PAST WINNERS
2017-18
Joe Pavelski
Brent Burns
Carey Price
