The lone Sunday game between the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers could ultimately decide who walks away with the FHL Cup championship and $500.00, GM Chester placing four chips on Boston (Pastrnak, Donato, DeBrusk and Krejci) and one chip on Florida (Reimer). GM Hamilton has only one chip to play after news surfaced that Aleksander Barkov will miss the final two games of the season, the Bluliners hoping the bouncing white ball lands on Florida, specifically Jonathan Huberdeau.
The Battle for the FHL Cup A quiet Friday saw Badger Bob pad their lead by 2.0 points, Victor Hedman scoring into an empty net for the Bobs while the Bluliners countered with a single assist from John Klingberg. Heading into a thick, possibly title-deciding 15-game Saturday, Badger Bob's first place lead is 4.3.
Side note: When the ice spray settles, the empty net goal by Victor Hedman could ultimately impact who wins the FHL championship. Ironically, the own-zone, curving-puck, post-dinger was in many ways representative of the enduring, back-and-forth, extraordinary battle for the 2017-18 championship. Yes, hockey is often a game of inches (less than an inch in Hedman's case).
The Bout for the Money Andrei Vasilevskiy was brutal on Friday, the Boulder Flyers netminder allowing 5 goals on 32 shots. The brutal performance however also provided the Flyers with an additional 5.7 points, Vasilevskiy credited with a 27 save win and a 3.0 point assist on Hedman's empty-netter (apparently, hockey is often a game of inches and luck). All told, the 3rd place Flyers again separated themselves from the 4th place Central Red Army, GM Morgan's birds now leading the money chase by 10.2.
The Scrap for the Laughing Bag The Polar Bears are feeling better about their chances after Friday's 5.0 point outing, GM Elya's 11th place team now leading the last place SC Cobras by 5.9 points. If the Cobras can't catch the Bears on Saturday they have an ace up their sleeve in Torey Krug, the only player on either team who will take to the ice on Sunday.
