GM Ken Hamilton and Bluliner forward Patrick Kane pose with the spoils of victory, the highly coveted FHL Cup.The Bluliners are the 2013-14 FHL Cup champions.
On the strength of the leagues best goaltending, the best defense, and a “good enough” crew of forwards, the Bluliners turned back the advances of all eight FHL teams, their toughest competition coming from the fast-starting Polar Bears - a team that gave the Bluliners headaches before crumpling in the final weeks of the season.
The Bluliners didn’t make a single trade during the season, largely because there was no need. GM Hamilton drafted extremely well, securing arguably the very best player with the 6th overall pick.
While the first round selection of Erik Karlsson was pivotal, the FHL Cup was won in the later rounds were Hamilton signed Mike Smith (5th round), Semyon Varlamov (6th round) and Victor Hedman (6th round). Even Hamilton's final pick of the draft was a keeper as Gabriel Landeskog (8th round, 140th overall) would pocket 26 goals.
In addition to a league-best draft, Hamilton chose wisely during the course of the season, his Midas Touch on display with the acquisitions of Patrice Bergeron, Jakub Voracek and T.J. Oshie.
The FHL championship is the fourth for Hamilton who first won the Cup in 1993. Hamilton’s other FHL titles were captured in 1994 and 1998.
In addition to the FHL Cup, Hamilton will receive $350.00 for finishing in first place. Other winnings include $9.00 for finishing second in the H2H2H standings and $36.00 for his twelve H2H2H victories. All told GM Hamilton will depart the season with a wide smile on his face and $395.00 in his pocket.
